15 killed in Biliran mishap

BILIRAN PROVINCE – 14 people were killed and 10 others injured while on their way to a wake of a family member on the evening of Saturday, July 21, at Caibiran town here. The latest bulletin on the incident is the body count has risen to 15 already, but this has yet to be confirmed.
According to sources, the fatalities and injured were related to each other. All were reportedly from the village of Villa Caneja and have hitched a ride with their village chairwoman Cornelia Montiadora for their transport to the wake of a relation.
Unfortunately, they met the accident when the truck lost its brakes while negotiating a tricky mountain road and careened downwards into a canal. 13 died on the spot and two others in hospitals where they were confined, barangay chairwoman Montiadora among them.
The victims who died on the spot were identified by the police as Honoria Regir, Lolita Yagon, Renato Escosis, Julito Yagon, Marianito Areglo, Juniel Rosete, Anthony Jay Montiadora, Lito Cabalquinto, Junita Rosete, Josephine Rosete, Junalin Rosete, Areglo Jennifer, Manilyn Rosete. Jennifer Caliao, who suffered severe injuries, died at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center in Tacloban City, some 2 hours away, where she was brought for treatment and another one has reportedly expired but this information has yet to be confirmed.
Four other victims Rica Mae Escores, Leonilo Rosite, Lina Areglo and Jeric Areglo are, as of press time, confined at the EVRMC; two at the Divine Word Hospital in Tacloban City, and four are at Biliran Provincial Hospital.
This is not the first incident where mourners in Biliran province were killed in accidents. Sometime two years ago, around nine people were killed when a truck lost its brakes and rammed into a group of people accompanying a funeral hearse.
