Tricycle driver turns snatcher

BUSINESS MUST be so bad for the drivers of more than 1,700 units of tricycles operating in Ormoc that one has become a snatcher.
Last April 11, at around 9:00 PM at the residential area near downtown, one tricycle driver attempted to snatch the bag of a teacher but was foiled when a policeman passed by perchance.
The suspect was identified as a Ricky Bernales, 29, a resident of DSWD Village at Brgy. Tambulilid here. He was driving tricycle number 300 when the incident transpired.
His would be victim was Rebecca Palar, a resident of District 10 and a teacher of a private school here. Palar told the police that she was walking home and was already near their gate when she heard a tricycle stop by her side. In seconds, the driver snatched her bag which she did not let go.
The resulting tug-of-war between the teacher and the driver-snatcher called the attention of PO3 Ruby Maglasang who was passing by. He stopped to check what was happening and attempted to arrest the driver. The driver-snatcher reportedly tried to elude arrest but by that time, Ms Palar’s neighbors had already surrounded him. Except for her P 30,000 cell phone that got busted in the tug-of-war with the driver-snatcher, the teacher did not lose anything.
The driver has been accordingly charged for his attempted snatching before assistant city prosecutor Rene Romero. On the other hand, the fiscal ordered the return of tricycle number 300 to its owner Ma. Luisa Alburo, also of Brgy. Tambulilid. By Paul Libres
